Numbers of threatened species assessed on the IUCN red list by major groups of Organisms
|
NOTES:
1. Threatened species are those listed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) or Vulnerable (VU).
2. Prior to the year 2000, The IUCN Red List was published in book form only, with updated versions being released every few years. The IUCN Red List web site was released in 2000, making more regular updates possible. Since then, the Red List has been updated at least once each year, with the exception of 2001 and 2005 when there were no updates published. Since 2009, The IUCN Red List has been updated at least twice each year, with separate version numbers being used for each update; the figures in Table 1b are for the latest versions published each year.
3. The figures for 1996/1998 are for the threatened species assessments that were published in the 1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals (Baillie and Groombridge 1998) and The World List of Threatened Trees (Oldfield et al . 1998).
4. The plant numbers DO NOT include species from the 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants (Walter and Gillett 1998) as those assessments used the pre-1994 IUCN system of threat categories. Hence the numbers of threatened plants in Table 1b are much lower when compared to the 1997 results. When reporting on threatened plants, the results from the current web version of The IUCN Red List should be combined with the 1997 Plants Red List. Since there have been many taxonomic changes for plant species since 1997, careful comparison of the current and 1997 species lists will be needed when combining these results to avoid double-counting.
5. Figures are not available for total number of gymnosperms and flowering plants assessed for the World List of Threatened Trees (Oldfield et al . 1998). Oldfield et al . (1998) included a summary table showing total numbers of species in each IUCN Red List Category (which included some assessments that were not actually included in the final publication), but there is no summary of numbers of species assessed by taxonomic group. The numbers of gymnosperm and flowering plant species assessed as threatened in Oldfield et al . (1998) were obtained through a manual count of species appearing in the publication.
